Are there many diesels sold in the us?

why don't diesels seem as popular as here in the uk. If you don't have at least a couple of diesel engine choices, then it won't really sell. Is it to do with the cetane rating, i've heard that cetane and octane ratings for fuel in the us is low, therefore low quality and the engines won't burn the fuel properly? or is it cost?
